Welcome Back!

Welcome to the 2023/2024 school year! I am pleased to introduce myself as your child’s grade five teacher. My name is Mrs. Emily MacQueen and this will be my twelfth year with the CBE and second year at Copperfield School.  Previously, I worked in other schools within the CBE and boards within Alberta. I am a passionate teacher who strives to make learning fun and rewarding! This year, unlike others, will be a memorable one! I look forward to working with you to ensure a safe and caring learning experience for your child.

First Days of School:

During the first few weeks of school, I will be learning about your child, both personally and academically. As building relationships will be of utmost importance within our cohort classroom among students and myself, we will be spending time getting to know one another in order to build a cohesive classroom community. I will be learning about who your child is, how they learn and what level your child is at, in order to best support them in the upcoming year. This will be done through a variety of opportunities and activities (brainstorming discussions, open ended tasks, Explain Your Thinking, writing opportunities and paper and pencil activities, just to name a few).

Room Number: Our classroom is 126 (the classroom closest to the office)

Door: Students will be entering the school through the Compound doors left to the gym (along  with  the grade 2 students). Please be mindful of the grade 2 students. Please take time to create a plan with your child about where they will meet you after school. Students will take off outdoor shoes on the carpet and carry them through the hallway, placing them just outside of our classroom. At the end of the day, students must say goodbye to their teacher before meeting their parent(s)/guardian or walking home.  Students will exit out the compound doors and meet you at your planned meeting spot. Teachers will remain outside until all students have found their adult.

Things to Bring on the First Day:

  • Backpack

  • Indoor shoes

  • Water bottle

  • Healthy snack

  • Lunch

Supplies: Each year, the CBE charges a student supplies fee which is used to purchase the supplies that students require. School supplies are then provided by the school to students.  Please refrain from sending extra personal belongings or supplies to school with your child.

Recess and Lunch: We will have a natural break in the afternoon as well as a nutrition break in the morning.  Please send a healthy snack that is easy for your child to open. Staggered lunch will occur this year. Grade 5 students will be eating their lunch in the Copper Gallery from 12:25 pm – 12:48 pm and then going outside to play from 12:48 pm – 1:12 pm. Students who go home for lunch will be dismissed at 12:25 pm and expected to return by 1:12 pm. Should your child stay for lunch, please ensure to include all necessary utensils to eat their lunch. There will not be any hot water or microwaves available.  We encourage students to pack a litterless lunch to reduce waste and to help protect our environment. *Please know we are a peanut/nut aware school, as we have many students with severe allergies.

Early Dismissal Friday: Students are dismissed on Fridays at 11:45 am. Children will still participate in nutrition breaks, therefore, please send your child with a healthy snack.

Outdoor Learning: Our school grounds are beautiful! Throughout this school year we will be visiting the playgrounds close by as well as both of the pond areas near the school. Please ensure your child comes to school dressed for the weather and prepared for lots of outdoor learning experiences.

Open Minds City Hall School November. 27th - Dec. 1st

Campus Calgary / Open Minds is an innovative school program that brings the classroom to vibrant community settings. Teachers, students and community experts come together for a week-long curriculum-based experience, designed to meet the needs of each individual learner. The result is a catalyst for learning activities throughout the year that inspire and prompt critical thinking and problem solving. More information will be provided closer to the date of our experience. In preparation for this week-long experience, it will be imperative that we have enough volunteers for each day. Please at your earliest convenience, make sure you have your security clearance with the CBE up to date.
