Mustard Seed Speaker - Thursday, October 19th, 2023
Hello Grade 5 Families,
This week on October. 19th, we will be welcoming guest speaker Cecily Letendre, the community engagement coordinator from The Mustard Seed. She will be talking about homelessness in downtown Calgary to prepare our students for our weeks at City Hall and Library School, and relating these topics to resilience.
The Mustard Seed is a non-profit organization that has been caring for individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty since 1984. Operating in five cities across Alberta and British Columbia, The Mustard Seed is a supportive haven where people can have their physical, mental, and spiritual needs met and grow toward greater health and independence.
Programs and services include:
Basic needs - emergency shelter, meals, clothing, and hygiene items
Health and Wellness
Housing
Employment
Spiritual Care
Community Engagement
Community Impact Centres
We have been preparing for this guest by reading several picture books about homelessness and poverty. We had some class discussions about whether/how poverty is a problem in Calgary. We also talked about several factors that could lead to poverty. This would be a great opportunity to talk about homelessness and poverty as a family- what do you know about it? Can your child provide some insight into what we have discussed at school?
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Mrs. MacQueen, Mrs. Barr, Ms. Heaney, & Mr. Marino
