June Newsletter Room 126

Good Afternoon Students and Parents of Room 126!

It’s hard to believe it is already June! I want to thank you all for your support this year, especially for stepping up when we needed volunteers. There are many incredible experiences we had this year that could not have happened without you.

Please continue to read about Curriculum updates and Important Dates to Come!

Math Topics for the Last Couple Weeks (As you are aware, we have a robust curriculum this year! Some of these topics will not be able to be covered in depth due to time constraints, so I will post some practice on Google Classroom if you would like to work on these at home)

We will be working on:

  • Adding and subtracting improper and mixed fractions with common denominators
  • Ratios to represent the relationship between two quantities
  • Statistics and Graphing
  • Continued practice of Division and Multiplication, as well as word problems

Language Arts – Much of our Language Arts writing continues to be incorporated into Social, Science and Health topics. Over the next couple of weeks, students will also be using the information you provided about their elementary school memories in order to create a poem about their elementary experiences.

Book Club – Students are in groups of 2/3, picked their novels to study and are currently working on fluency and comprehension with their partner(s).

Read Aloud – We have started reading the book, The City of Ember. Students have been continuing to use sketch noting as a comprehension strategy which has proven very helpful for most students’ abilities to remember important events and improve their understanding. We have been completing multiple choice, short and long answer, true-false questions frequently to support the development of test-taking skills, and to check in on comprehension.

Science - Electricity and Magnetism and Mechanisms Using Electricity – We have started these units and have been working in small groups at different centres that include activities such as identifying electrical hazards, using static electricity to separate salt and pepper, researching different energy sources, distinguishing conductors and insulators, and creating different types of circuits that include switches.

Social Studies – Take a moment to view (on google drive) your child’s completed Diary Entries from the perspective of an immigrant in 1905 from Ukraine, Poland, Russia or Germany, and how they might have experienced life in Canada during that time.

We will continue to study and discuss confederation, indigenous relations, the Famous Five, and how economic booms and crashes affected ways of life in Canada over the next couple weeks.

Important Upcoming Dates!
