With a new season just around the corner, let’s SPRING into reading!

Our 6th annual Copperfield Read-A-Thon will take place from March 4th- 15th and you can already begin to gather sponsors to collect pledges for books read by students. The amount that sponsors choose to donate is up to you! Throughout our Read-A-Thon, students will have the opportunity to participate in having guest readers join their classes virtually and in person. These guest readers may include a variety of readers such as CBE professionals, emergency service personnel, authors, artists, and athletes. Top fundraisers from each grade will be put into a draw for a prize. There will also be fun prizes for our top readers, including the chance to be the principal for a day! Please read through the pledge form that was sent home with students for more information on specific dates and how to collect cash or cheques from your sponsors and return them to the school. All money raised will go to literacy resources for our school. We encourage all students to participate for the love of reading!

*Fundraising paper package will be sent home Wednesday.

HOMEWORK UPDATES

  • Math- 10 mins a night - please ensure that your child is practicing their multiplication and division basic facts up to 12 x 12 each night. This can be done in a variety of ways (flashcards, dice, cards, online free computer games abcya, com etc.).
  • Reading - 20 mins a night - please read with your child when possible and ask them comprehension questions to ensure proper comprehension and level of book (more challenging is alright as long as they are reading with you). Please refer to the handout sent home earlier this year to support asking higher level questioning.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP
We continue to take a deeper dive into understanding Digital Citizenship and the role it plays in our lives. Students are participating in viewing short video clips followed by conversations to support their learnings in the areas of being respectful, informed, involved balanced, safe and responsible.

HEALTH
  • You will soon receive detailed information about the upcoming important Human Sexuality unit, including how to opt in/out.
  • This last week we had a conversation about sweating and body odour, understanding that both sweating and body odour are a natural part of being healthy. Students were asked to go home and talk with their parent(s) about their bathing/showering, deodorant routines. Students understand the sensitivity about this topic, including that this is a personal/family personal choice.
SOCIAL STUDIES
  • Students are just finishing up their work on the North West Mounted Police / Royal Canadian Mounted Police. You will be able to view this work on the bulletin board outside Room 127 and in notebooks during our upcoming Parent/Teacher Conferences.
  • Be An Upstander! Students are learning about what an upstander is and how upstanders in history have carved Human Rights to what they are today. Understanding qualities of upstanders, what makes one an upstander and that this work along with Civil Rights movements is ongoing is important in our classroom learning. Please take a special viewing of the bulletin board outside Room 126 to see how our students are making this work visible and being school leaders in this area!
MATH
  • Multiplication and Division are our areas of focus right now. Please see notes in the homework section on how you can support this important learning at home. I am

  • specifically asking for your support in practicing with your child nightly in the acquisition of basic multiplication and division facts up to and including 12 X 12. Thank you ahead of time for you support!
SCIENCE
  • We will be wrapping up our Chemistry Unit shortly after finishing up with a couple more experiments/activities. Students have enjoyed participating in group work to follow through with the scientific method. Stay tuned for what's to come next!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
  • After the lacrosse unit, we will be taking up our gymnastics unit with some new equipment and opportunities for learning.
  • Students will be grouped in different ways to best support their learning and confidence building. Working in groups and with different parters allows for optimal learning particularly in learning friendship skills and being able to be flexible and collaborative in order to be successful. If you know this is an area of growth for your child, you may want to talk to them ahead of time and throughout the unit to support their growth in this area. Focussing on supportive words around friendship building and leadership skills is a positive starting point.
ABSENTENCES
  • Thank you for your continued e-mails around appointments, early pick-up times and family days/holidays where students will be away during instructional time. I appreciate being notified as it supports my planning in the classroom. If your child is absent, I will support them in catching up once they return back to school. Please feel free to e-mail me with upcoming absenteeisms in March/April. Thank you!
Thank you for all your continued support! We are such an amazing group of students in Grade 5 and that of course is largely because of the supports from home! Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or updates that I should be aware of.

Have a great rest of your weekend!
Mrs. Emily MacQueen
