Mrs. MacQueen’s Room 126 Classroom Update and Important Dates to Remember

Good Evening Parents and Students,

Thank you for your continued support in ensuring your child is on time and ready to learn each day! We continue to chip away at the very robust grade 5 curriculum with success! Below is an update on what we are working on in each Curriculum area as well as an update of important dates.

Please note that I will be away next week and Mrs. Kris Wright will be stepping in during my absence. She is a lovely teacher that I have worked with over the last several years and I am sure our class will enjoy her! I will be reviewing behavior and academic expectations with students this week in preparation.

Math – We are currently finishing up 2 by 2-digit and 3 by 2-digit multiplication with a math quiz at the end of this week. Students will be working through their corrections and if required, receiving one to one, and/or small group supports in preparation for their quiz later this week. As we continue to explore multiplication we shift to its’ inverse operation, division. Today we also explored factor trees in a hands-on whole group activity, which helped us to break down products into equations. Next week students will be working on a unit about congruency and symmetry, including a sketching symmetry project.

English – Today we finished the novel, “Grandpa’s Great Escape”. Students thoroughly enjoyed this humorous novel which touched on empathy, Alzheimer’s, WWII and strong family bonds that spread generations. Students will be completing a quiz to demonstrate their knowledge tomorrow including short answer, true/false and putting events in order. While listening to this novel, students focused on the skill of creating jot notes and pictures to deepen their comprehension.

To complete our Wellness Sprint of learning about gratitude, students created shape poems to demonstrate their understandings. Some examples are posted on the blog.

Social Studies – Students are currently completing the last part of their Canadian Regions Group Projects. Bringing coding alive through our NEW OZOBOT robotics, students have created scripts to create a Tourism Opportunity showing their teacher exploring each region. Video clips will be shared through hands on learning in our hallways, where other students will be able to view this fun demonstration of learning!

Science – Weather is our current unit of study, which will be followed by our Electricity unit to finish off the year! Students are currently recording daily local weather to look for patterns over time. Our class is especially looking forward to learning about different cloud patterns and extreme weather.

Art – We continue our path across Canada exploring Canadian artists. We just completed works in the style of Ted Harrison and Emily Carr. Who else will we be exploring? Stay tuned!

Physical Education – Be sure to be on time for school on the 23rd as skating starts at 8:20am sharp! We have also been playing kickball, which has quickly become a grade 5 favorite for both Phys Ed and recess time!

Health – The Human Sexuality Unit will take place with daily lessons April 29th to May 3rd. Please refer to the previous messages from school messenger if you are requesting to opt your child out of these lessons.
